It was surreal how I ended up covering this. There was a large fest of bands I have no idea of and only a few I was actually looking forward to see, mainly Peaches, Royksopp and We are Enfants Terrible. Despite all of that it did end up a pretty fun festival to shoot. Not to mention it being such an accessible place to be.
Not sure where to start really, arrived slightly late and managed to catch a few bands I haven’t heard, Marina and the Diamonds were fun to listen to as well as Telepathe. I really enjoyed We are Enfants Terrible, was a shame they started so early in the day.
I quite liked the front, they had nice LED backdrops. Walking around the place was pretty easy since the site was pretty ickle, not to mention the time it ends (9pm). Mainly due to it being a residential area and all.
Some of the tents were annoying, the lighting folks thought it was appropriate to just use red lights You’ll simply see me lounging in the pit and waiting for the right opportunity rather than constantly shoot in the crazy casts. They were fine at times like this shot of MPHO, they were fun
Sneaky Sound Systems were mucho fun too, this is back to the front main stage where light was natural and they had the fancy LED background type thing. At some point I got sneaky and looked at the lighting guys desk, it was fun seeing the raw video of what was suppose to be displayed on those screens. Really enjoyed Sneaky Sound Systems, people were all kinds of excited seeing them, nice and bouncy.
Another thing I like doing, shooting the crowd, most folks in front instantly react when you wave a camera at them, guess it’s mainly the idea that they might be featured somewhere. I love this shot particularly because it features TWO THUMBS UP! The wide lens helps with the depth of the shot too! Oh and the blueee tent om nom nom!
VV Brown was all kinds of fun, I’ve heard them a few times, but not properly, this time I quite enjoyed her set. Preferred her hair when it was all up but this one is pretty cute too
Wasn’t sure what to expect for Miss Kitten & the Hacker, but those lights! MAN THOSE LIGHTS! They were pretty epic for one person. It looked like she was in charge of them and whenever she wanted to, she’d shoot those lights like they were no tomorrow. Actually, come to think of it, this was the set where some girl kept flashing at me and going “HOW DO YOU LIKE IT”. I teased them a bit and used my flash on them hehe. It didn’t get too funny when they started choking me by my scarf at peaches (well not choking, but… actually, yeah it was choking, wasn’t that horrible but yeah)
Peachess! Squee, this was definitely the highlight of the day, typical Peach gig involves climbing on pilars during “Talk to me”, walking on the crowd and other kinds of hectic dancing. I kinda like this shot mainly because it was nice and vibrant, and pink and blue went really well . She did do an epic jump but i missed that, not to mention this was the point where my memory would run full and I had to ninja in a new memory card. I kinda like it though, same as lens switching, mainly because it feels like handling a revolver. I dunno if she did the cool Kylie dance routine to “I feel cream” because I was out to see Royksopp, this was probably the one gig I was sad not to see properly Damn you gig clashing
After Peaches it was Royksopp, this was the one set where I was able to enjoy front to back. It’s rare for Royksopp to play in London so I made sure I made the most of it. They played a lovely set including “Royksopp Forever”, “You Dont Have a Clue”, “The Girl and the Robot” (which had Robyn singing), “Eple” “Poor Leno”, “Remind me” (i think), “What Else is There” and “Only this Moment” with Anneli guest singing. Bit sad that Karin wasn’t there, guess it was a super treat for me when I saw them play at Royal Festival Hall where Karin was actually supporting as Fever Ray (though she didn’t sing What Else is There which was sad ).
The Royksopp gig was filled people around me taking cocaine, smoking weed and climbing up on pilars. I probably inhaled alot of the shit as I had a terrible headache afterwards. The fresh air was nice once I was out of the tent. An epic set. Afterwards I went back to main stage to catch Orbital, couldn’t really shoot Pendulum since apparently they were only allowing one photographer there, plus it was a DJ set, wasn’t keen on seeing a dude behind some decks. There were rumours that 2 Many DJs were playing but i think that was just a shitty rumour. Orbital were definitely fun to listen to, it was a nice end to it all.
I managed to leave pretty early and get myself a filthy KFC, i realised that I didn’t eat the entire festival (what with my detest to festival food) so the KFC was just all kinds of amazing when starving hehe. Not sure if I’d go to Get Loaded in the Park again, it was quite annoying in loads of areas but we’ll see.
