It’s like sophie’s choice but for geeks. After purchasing emmeee, I’ve had my mind set on buying some extravagant instead of focusing on the ickle things, so I’m stuck with 2 objects of desire, an Apple Mac Pro 2.26ghz 8 core desktop computer or a Canon 5d mk ii Full Frame DSLR camera. If you know neither of these products you might as well stop reading now.

Both have their advantages; the Mac Pro will get me into the world of Apple and play around with resource hungry apps like Photoshop and Lightroom with lickerty lightning speed whilst the Canon 5d Mkii will help me substancially for low light gig photography with it’s awesome lack of noise at high iso’s and its full frame architecture, my second reason also being it being able to record in HD.

The funny thing is that Mac Pro will help me out most when I actually have the Canon 5d since I would be shooting in crazy 21 megapixel resolutions in RAW meaning it would sure help to have a beef PC handling those images. I would also be able to start doing some proper music with pro tools and whatnot since I have all the gear I need, just not much time to play around with it.

Man so much geekiness in this post. Photography or Geekery? The question is obviously which one i need out of the two, the answer being neither because I already have a desktop PC and a DSLR camera, it’s just nice to have some proper high end gear to make things a little bit awesome, so uhm… yeah.. here’s a poll (really need to use this option more)

get the Mac Pro and then the 5d, it seems like that’s the sensible order if you’d be wanting the Mac’s power when handling the images.

    Also, Mac > PC!

do it do it do it

well the thing is, i’m waiting for snow leopard (next os iteration for mac) to come out so it comes bundled in with it as well as spend a pretty long time muling over which mac pro i should get (it’s a monster machine with a monster price tag). so yeah, will be a few months to get it (as well as save up). with canon 5d mk ii things won’t upgrade on a whim too. it’s definitely a toughie :P

oh and get a gravatar account ;)

I bought the 5d mk ii first (this May). Now I’m looking at the nehalem 8-core MacPro. It’s a bundle, especially since I’ll be getting a new display with it (24″ or 30″). Except for the ATI video card, I’ll be buying the 2.26 bare bones and upgrading as I go along (hardware and software) in order to spread out the hurt to my savings.

Editing the mk II’s RAW files on my current machine (dual 1GHz G4) is s…l…o…w (especially using DxO Optics Pro software — highly recommended).

The 5d is quite a technical handful. Two months into owning it, I am still moving up its learning curve. It looks like I’ll have it all figured out about the time I move to a new mac — which is one way to go about this.

Hehe i bought the canon first, it was nicer to know that something was significantly better :) not to mention when you’re editing raw files and hd videos, the slowness of it all gave me the desire and purpose to get the mac pro :D i already got mine which is all good :) it was secretly upgraded which meant i saved £400 odd :D the 5d is pretty epic in terms of functionality, still so much to learn from me :)

what's up chuck?
