I love taking crowd shots, during gigs it’s always hard capturing the crowd when you’re part of it, but once at the pit it’s nice to just turn around, not focus on the band for a bit and start photolising the crowd instead, they’re more than happy to really scream for the camera and it doubles the fun when you take shots and people somehow later on find themselves in the photo and comment on it (had that a number of times!).
Best photos are when you can get a piece of the band and the crowd, but that shot is usually when you’ve got a really nice wide lens, and you’re standing in the extreme side of the stage. Anyway, check out some more crowd shots:
Their expressions are priceless! These guys were definitely having fun and eventually stu (the guy on the left) found his way to my blog to tell me it was him
Sometimes you can do some pretty “arty” shots (especially in biblical churches). My friends John and Adam are in this shot, obviously not the couple in front (because that’ll be wrong)
Confetti and crowds are pretty neat too, even when it’s just hands, hmm the balloons and confetti reminds me of this…
Not sure if the portrait part of this work, crowd shots are usually of the landscape variety to give a sense of overwhelming number of people at the gig, but luckily i suppose this shot has balloons so having it in portrait allowed me to show the balloons, a wider shot would have obviously been the cure for this but whatever haha. Of course I was able to do a band and crowd shot, but just at a free rough trade gig with of Montreal playing, I had to walk to the extreme extreme right to take the shot, but it was worth it
and I suppose this kinda counts?
and then we can’t forget about the day where loads and loads of muse fans gathered around to sing songs for charity, got to love ninja photography.
Think I can add loads and loads of notes to who’s who but I’ll probably let you do that if you find yourself in one of those shots! But yeah, crowd shots are ace, most of the time the venue is too dark to take photos of the crowd so the opportunity isn’t really there, but if you do come across a decent amount of light shining on the crowd, do try and turn around to take photos of them, they’re more important than the band in a sense that the band are the tree falling down and the crowd are the ears (or something stupidly silly but deep and meaningful at the same time).
On another note: It’s my birthday tomorrow, will probably write something more epic later on the day.
Cool crowd shots! I like the Muse one with the balloons, and the one of John and Adam at St Giles. I like seeing myself in crowd shots, it’s funny seeing things from a different perspective. I won’t be in any of your crowd shots though because I’m usually standing right next to you!
Thanks I hate being in photographs, makes me feel vulnerable being pictorised haha :p you’re in my video for I’m From Barcelona, i totally go ninja there and video everyone in the crowd too
very nice post bob, it is awesome to look back and see people entranced! And as usual awesome photos!
